-ED ENDINGS
The past simple of regular verbs is formed by adding the suffix -ed. There are three different ways to pronounce this suffix depending on the preceding sound:
Watch the video and make sure you understand what voiced / voiceless sounds are. Take notes of all voiced / voiceless sounds in English.
ACTIVITIES
- Fill in the table with voiced / voiceless sounds.
- Listen to the pronunciation for the suffix -ed and put them in the correct column. (tracks 6 & 7)
- Listen to the following sentences. Pay attention to the sound of the -ed verb endings. Is it /d/ /t/ /ɪd/? (Track 8)

- _________ This person decided to become a vegetarian last year.
- _________ This person enjoyed going to a rock concert on Saturday
- _________ This person kissed someone at a party last night.
- _________ This person laughed at some funny stories last week.
- _________ This person lived in France for a year.
- _________ This person painted a great picture last month.
- _________ This person phoned a friend at lunchtime.
- _________ This person waited an hour in front of the cinema for tickets.
- _________ This person watched a good programme on TV yesterday.
- _________ This person climbed up a mountain on Saturday.
- _________ This person started aerobics classes last month.
- _________ This person travelled around Spain last summer.
- _________ This person wanted a new computer for Christmas.
- _________ This person washed all the dishes after lunch last Sunday.
Adjectives formed from verbs followed the same rules, although there are some exceptions (aged, naked, wicked, among others).
