Rupert Brooke belongs to the first generation of war poets. He died soon and he did not experience much fighting. He thought war was safe and cleansing, as the only that can suffer is the body, and death can even be a reward. 

Read and listen to his poem "The Soldier". Then discuss the questions below with your group. 

  1. Who is speaking? Is he afraid of death?
  2. Where will his grave be? How will his dead body enrich the soil?
  3. Rhyme scheme and type of poem.
  4. List images referring to:

    2. English landscape
    3. Private feelings and inner growth.

5. Define the tone of the poem and summarize its themes.
